Queen Ysolde the Old has decided that a realm nobody has mapped cannot be governed, and you are her new Royal Cartographer. Your warrant sends you west, down the Crooked Mile, to Nightingale Hollow: the fairy wood, where the rings move and are therefore difficult to tax. Sorrel, Queen of the Fairy Court, grants you one night among the dances, on conditions. You may chart a ring but never step in one. No two fairies may ever touch on your charts. And you will eat nothing and drink nothing, however it is offered.

The Fairy Rings is a book of 100 star-placement logic puzzles set inside a fantasy story. Each chart is a grid divided into rings. Place the fairies so that every row, every column and every ring holds exactly its share, one fairy in the early chapters and two in the later ones, and no two fairies ever touch, not even at a corner.

Inside

  • 100 puzzles in ten dances, rising from easy 5×5 charts to fiendish 10×10 charts with two fairies per ring
  • Exactly one solution each, checked by computer, and every one solvable by reasoning alone with no guessing
  • Clear rules with diagrams, a step-by-step worked example and the Cartographer’s six tricks
  • A cartographer’s journal of one night in the fairy wood, with a twist revealed after the solutions
  • Rich black-and-white ink illustrations: a frontispiece, a map of Nightingale Hollow, a picture for every dance, a bestiary, and Quill the owl hiding in seven of them
  • Large 8.5 x 11 inch pages, big writable cells, full solutions

For adults who like their logic puzzles with a story and their fantasy with a dry wit: giants, dragons, dwarves, unicorns and fairies, the creatures of the old tales, in a realm all its own. Book Two of the Owlbrook Legends series; every book stands alone.
